East End Abstract

Duchamp and Sons, the youth collaboration group at Whitechapel Gallery, are working on an abstract film response to the exhibition Josiah McElheny: The Past Was A Mirage I Had Left Behind

Their films will be created using 16mm film (transferred to digital for the final screening) and informed by ideas around abstraction, inquiring into the neignbourhood outside the gallery, the East End of London

The project is being run in partnership with No.w.here and will be on show on the 12th July at 7pm in Gallery 2 of the Whitechapel Gallery

Follow the group’s journey of creating their project and the run up to their final screening on REcreative

Dancing in Whitechapel 28/04/2012

I attended an event hosted by Duchamp and Sons, in relation to the current Gillian Wearing exhibition at the Whitechapel gallery

Wearing’s photography and video footage is of a sensitive nature, focusing on people’s past experience’s and childhood memories, all of which are incredibly emotionally charged

The exhibition is spread out over two rooms. The first room hosts multiple screening spaces, in which there is video footage being played on loop. The second room exhibits photographs and another singular video clip

As an enthusiast of photography as a medium, it was interesting that I was instead, more drawn to the video footage of people’s stories. The video art is extremely intense to view, but the depiction of raw emotion is simply more powerful and real, when communicated through the form of film then when captured as stills

Upon leaving the exhibition, there is a confessions box, in which attendees have the opportunity to mask themselves and be recorded, revealing a dark secret or confession

The exhibition offers a rare and vivid insight into the personal lives of others. You are invited to engage with the subject’s experience’s and sympathise with them, so that you leave any prejudice beliefs that you may have had regarding anyone upon entering the exhibition, at the door when you leave

A dark and insightful show, I cannot recommend this exhibition enough
